One of the most common and frustrating computer problems is when you have no sound. Now you would think such a basic problem is easy to fault find however there are many reasons why you might not be getting any sound out of your computer. I recently moved my PC while renovating my office and when setting my computer back up I soon found the computer no longer made any noise.

The good thing is that before the move I knew the speakers were working. To confirm the speakers weren’t working I quickly popped my favourite Coldplay CD into my DVD drive. Checking the PC volume mixer in the bottom right corner I noticed the speakers were not muted and the volume turned up. My next thoughts went to the speakers themselves. I have a set of Acoustic Energy AEGO 2.1-CH speakers. These three speakers in total, two smaller left and right speakers and a larger speaker, I sit under my desk for the lower frequency sounds. This sub-woofer has a headphone socket and volume control knob including a small red light to show they are on. The red light was gleaming but to check the volume was not too low I turned the knob all the way anti- clockwise until it clicked which turned the speakers off. Now I turned the volume clockwise to turn them back on, ensuring I left the volume somewhere in the middle.

On noticing the headphone socket that reminded me to check the headphone socket on the front of my PC which I often use to plug my headphones into. Fortunately it was empty so my next thought were to check the speakers were plugged in correctly.

Now I am always confused when it comes to the color coding used for the speaker input sockets on the back of PC’s. I had a quick look for my sound card manual but it was not easy to hand so I quickly Googled it. I soon found a diagram showing common color coding with green for line output which my speakers should be connected to. I soon realised this was my problem and that I had mistakenly plugged it into the microphone (pink) socket. It was at this point I finally decided to label the wires up on the back of my speakers to help make sure I don’t have the same problem setting up my PC again.
