Protecting Your Data

At one time, the majority of the computers that people used for business and personal use were stationary. In order to use them, you needed to be sitting at the desk in front of the PC or at the very least, be hardwired into the network in some way or another. With the popularity of laptops, however, this is changing quickly. In fact, many people are using laptops, not only to be able to travel and to take their work with them when they are on the go but also as a stationary computer as well. This has many different benefits but it can also cause some problems, if things aren’t set up properly. What are some of the things that you should consider to make sure that your laptop security is as tight as possible?

One of the most important things for you to consider is that you should have the right type of laptop data encryption and make full use of it when possible. Data encryption, either through full disk encryption or through the encryption of sensitive data can help to keep prying eyes from seeing that information when you’re on a public network. In addition, it can help to protect the information that is on your computer, should you happen to get some type of malicious spyware program installed. Of course, this is only one of the many things that can be done in order to protect your security while using a laptop but it is the best line of defense when it comes to keeping people from getting your information.

The Convenience of Tablets

The handheld tablet computer has really redefined the way that many of us do business. We use it for taking notes, organizing our information, and even for taking credit card information if your business needs a tablet for that purpose. Along with that convenience, however, is the fact that if you are going to use this type of item, you are going to have your hands full. That can make it inconvenient, but such is not the case when you have the right type of iPad kiosk. One of those items can transform your tablet into something that is both useful and secure. Of course, you are going to want to consider the options that are available on the kiosk before you make your purchase.

One of the things that you are going to want to make sure of is the fact that the iPad mounts that you choose are completely secure. This is not only true when it comes to the antitheft options that may be available, but you would also want to protect the controls of the tablet as well. This will help to reduce the likelihood that you will have any hacking of your data. You can also use these devices in order to cover some of your more important keys as well as the forward facing camera. You will find that it gives you a portable, steady and solid option for having a kiosk in your business, and it will also help you to be hands-free if you need to use your tablet without tying up your hands in the process.

Label Your Computer Speaker Wires for Easy Setup

One of the most common and frustrating computer problems is when you have no sound. Now you would think such a basic problem is easy to fault find however there are many reasons why you might not be getting any sound out of your computer. I recently moved my PC while renovating my office and when setting my computer back up I soon found the computer no longer made any noise.

The good thing is that before the move I knew the speakers were working. To confirm the speakers weren’t working I quickly popped my favourite Coldplay CD into my DVD drive. Checking the PC volume mixer in the bottom right corner I noticed the speakers were not muted and the volume turned up. I even noticed the sound bar bouncing up and down to the beats of “The Scientist”.

My next thoughts went to the speakers themselves. I have a set of Acoustic Energy AEGO 2.1-CH speakers. These three speakers in total, two smaller left and right speakers and a larger speaker, I sit under my desk for the lower frequency sounds. This sub-woofer has a headphone socket and volume control knob including a small red light to show they are on. The red light was gleaming but to check the volume was not too low I turned the knob all the way anti- clockwise until it clicked which turned the speakers off. Now I turned the volume clockwise to turn them back on, ensuring I left the volume somewhere in the middle.

On noticing the headphone socket that reminded me to check the headphone socket on the front of my PC which I often use to plug my headphones into. Fortunately it was empty so my next thought were to check the speakers were plugged in correctly.

Now I am always confused when it comes to the color coding used for the speaker input sockets on the back of PC’s. I had a quick look for my sound card manual but it was not easy to hand so I quickly Googled it. I soon found a diagram showing common color coding with green for line output which my speakers should be connected to. I soon realised this was my problem and that I had mistakenly plugged it into the microphone (pink) socket. It was at this point I finally decided to label the wires up on the back of my speakers to help make sure I don’t have the same problem setting up my PC again.

Your Best Bet For Data Backup: Choosing the Right Strategy

When it comes to backing up your sensitive data, there are a number of strategies that you can use. The key is to choose the method that will provide you with the level of protection you require, while being easy enough to ensure that it can be used regularly and efficiently.

There are three main computer back up strategies; backing up to local media, online or cloud backup and private cloud backup.

Local Media Backup

Local media backup involves backing up your data onto a storage device that is located close to your computer system. Local media storage devices include things like external hard drives, USB flash drives, or CD/DVD-RW disks. In most cases, you simply install data backup software, connect the storage device to your computer and follow the program instructions.

The advantage of using local media backup is that it is simple, efficient and relatively low-cost. Your data is secure, provided you keep it in your possession or physically well guarded at all times. Another plus is the accessibility of your data. You can backup or retrieve your data at any time and quickly transfer it to its desired location.

The disadvantages of local media backup are mainly related to the storing, organization and security of the data. Using a physical device such as an external hard drive to stare your data means that you must keep the drive in a secure location to prevent it from being stolen or misplaced. This takes time and may cost you money as well.

Another disadvantage of using local media is that it is often vulnerable to the same kinds of problems that cause data loss from your main system. For example, fire, floods, power surges and the like are just as likely to wipe out your backup system as well as your primary computer system.

With that said, the ease and efficiency of local media storage may make it preferable for private computer users or very small businesses.

Data Backup FAQs

The importance of regularly backing up your data can’t be underestimated. Every year thousands of computer users, from private individuals to small and large businesses lose critical data due to hard drive failure, natural disasters or other events.

Still many computer users don’t back up their data, either because they don’t think data loss will happen to them or they don’t know how to go about it. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about data backup.
